From the American forces were recruited the first teachers of English. * By 1908, the primary and intermediate grades were using English. It was also about this time when UP, the forerunner in the use of English in higher education, was founded. Writers of this period were still adjusting to the newfound freedom after the paralyzing effect of repression of thought and speech under the Spanish regime. * The Period of Imitation: 1910-1925 * By 1919, the UP College Folio published the literary compositions of the first Filipino writers in English. They were the pioneers of in short story writing. * They were then groping their way into imitating American and British models which resulted in a stilted, artificial and unnatural style, lacking vitality and spontaneity. * Writers of this folio included Fernando Maramag, Juan F. Salazar, Jose M.Hernandez, Vicente del Fierro and Francisco Tonogbanua. * The Period of Self-Discovery: 1925-1941 * By this time, Filipino writers had acquired the mastery of English writing. * They now confidently and competently wrote on a lot of subjects although the old-time favorites of love and youth persisted. * They went into all for ms of writings like the novel and the drama. This Way to the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen
ââ¬Å"It is that very hope that makes people go without a murmur to the gas chambers, keeps them from risking revolt, paralyses them into numb inactivityâ⬠¦ hope that breaks family ties, makes mothers renounce their children, or wives sell their bodies for bread, or husbands to kill. â⬠(122) ââ¬Å"This Way to the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemenâ⬠by Tadeusz Borowski displays how survival and death have a close relationship. With an absence of morality Tedeusz becomes a key component to the executorââ¬â¢s effort. The overturn of values and an uncertain hope by the personal view of Tedeusz reflects on how the civilization as a whole is suffocated by Nazi control. It is essential to endure these issues in order to survive. The narrator Tedeusz slides into survival mode with a unique role in the camp, he witnesses and describes the complexity of survival and hope in the camp. He arrives at Auschwitz as a ââ¬Å"politicalâ⬠prisoner when the policy on extermination changes, three weeks earlier ââ¬Å"Aryansâ⬠stopped being sent to the gas chambers, with that he wedges himself in the middle of the hierarchy. With that, he does not live as a prisoner and does not endure the daily tasks as bad as most. He becomes one of the experienced, well-adjusted, completely institutionalized inmates. For him everything is a matter of sheer practicality, and people who refuse to cooperate with the necessary politics of camp life deserve not pity but contempt. The Canada men ââ¬Å"carry [the babies] like chickensâ⬠(116), showing their surrender to the system of the Nazis. He is a victim collaborating in crime; immunized against the evil that surrounds him; able to find a fairly comfortable situation. His tone is one of moral indifference; he views the murdered people and the ones dying of starvation from a distance, without compassion, with scorn even. In ââ¬Å"Auschwitz, Our Home,â⬠one of the short stories in the collection, the narrator exclaims, ââ¬Å"Never before in the history of mankind has hope been stronger than man, but never also has it done so much harm as it has in this war, in this concentration camp. We were never taught how to give up hope, and this is why today we perish in gas chambers. ââ¬Å"(122) He is confronted by a world where the future is unknown. It plants an insightful thought of the working world. The writing portrays in such a brutally honest tone it forces us to confront the world and our understanding of human nature. In Auschwitz the odds are against survival what happens when we are confronted by a world where a future is not certain. We are asked to reaffirm our beliefs and the foundation for our beliefs. Does hope motivate us to action, or in essence of the text, does it paralyze our belief system and make us less likely to act for survival? Some characters that came off the trains showed yes some showed no. One character in particular bravely makes a decision right from the train. ââ¬Å".. And over there is the gas chamber: communal death, disgusting and ugly. And over in the other direction is the concentration campâ⬠¦ more hideous, more terrible than deathâ⬠¦ I know, she says with a shade of proud contemptâ⬠¦ She walks off resolutely in the direction of the trucks. â⬠This is a dignified act; she is unafraid to stand up for her values. On the contrary, a woman is numbed by the choice she must make, ââ¬Å"She is young, healthy, good-looking, she wants to live. But the child runs after her, wailing loudly: ââ¬ËMama, mama donââ¬â¢t leave me! ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (43), she sacrifices her morals for a hope of survival with a tragic innate act. The novel also exhibits how hope gets in the way for survival. Every aspect of civilization is devalued so that everyone is under the same system created by the Nazis. Incomers remind the prisoners of their lost values and show a glimpse of the outside world, they are then treated with resentment and disgust. The Nazis and the prisoners feel better than the incomers and quickly reject them and their system of values in forms of anger. The Canada men ââ¬Å"brutally tear suitcases from their hands, impatiently pull of their coatsâ⬠(118). As a ââ¬Å"woman reaches down quickly to pick up her handbag. A whip flies, the woman screams, stumbles, and fallsâ⬠(115) the narrator says, ââ¬Å"I don't know why, but I am furious, simply furious with these people-furious because I must be here because of them. I feel no pity. I am not sorry they're going to the gas chamber. â⬠(116) the prisoners feel anger toward the incomers because ââ¬Å"the easiest way to relieve your hate is to turn against someone weaker. â⬠(116) Even the prisoners feel no sympathy for the incomers because the outside and inside worlds of the camp do not mix; only one world can exist. Since a civilization is based on pure values, these values must be united as one. ââ¬Å"If the dead are wrong and the living are always right, everything is finally justified; but the story of Borowskiââ¬â¢s life and that which he wrote about Auschwitz show that the dead are right, and not the living. â⬠(26) To endure the derailed moral value in the camp, one must live in savagely, in each present moment and with faith to survive. By way of justification and structure Tedeusz and others learn that survival and death are in close association.

Gatto Against Schools Critique
Jamille Coy ââ¬Å"Against School: How public education cripples our kids, and why ââ¬Å", is a piece written by John Taylor Gatto which was published in the Harpers Magazine September 2003 issue. Gatto was a New York City public school teacher for about thirty years , who after all this time teaching came to a conclusion that public schooling was nothing but, a system created by the high powers to create a large labour force and to keep the general public under some level of control. He believed that schools stifled a child maturing process and the only way to curb this issue way to educate our own children. Gatto opens his piece speaking about his personal experiences within the public school systems in Manhattan, where he says he became an expert in boredom. His expertise in this area of boredom he claims came from the kids he taught, who always complained about being bored in the class room and being taught by teachers who were also bored and uninterested in their subject. He then said we are to blame for our boredom and the only person obligated to amuse you ways oneââ¬â¢s self. He said he learnt this remedy of amusing oneââ¬â¢s self to cure boredom from his grandfather. The use of these personal or firsthand experiences were very effective because it tells the reader that the writer isnââ¬â¢t just writing from pure opinion but from something more, which allows you to trust him. He follows by saying that he believes people who didnââ¬â¢t know they were responsible for their own amusement were childish and should be avoided and definitely not trusted. He claims that he often defied custom and bent laws just to help kids to get out of the trap of boredom and childishness. He said teachers had a choice either help kids take an education or help them receive it and he was one who wanted to help kids receive it. Consequently he explains that he was fired after childish adults plotted against him and after nine months of tormented effort and his family having to suffer he was able to reacquire his teachersââ¬â¢ license. In this part of Gattoââ¬â¢s piece he uses a lot of strong words (avoided, not trusted, defy, trap, plotted, tormented) which can be both positive and negative. In one instance it may get scare the reader into believing him and in another it can be seen as terribly biased and cause paranoia. He end off the introductory paragraph quoting Gorge W Bush saying what if when he said ââ¬Å"leave no child behindâ⬠he accidentally spoke the truth, was our schools designed to make sure not one child ever grows up?This quotation was the introduction to the main idea of his article and it was very effective because he used authority in using G W Bush and also ended it off with a rhetorical question to leave the reader thinking and preparing him/her for what is about to follow. In the opening to his main argument or body he asks three rhetorical questions which he follows by indirect answers ââ¬Å"Do we really need school? Is it really necessary? If so for what? He then answers all these questions indirectly saying that 2 million happy homeschoolers showed that we didnââ¬â¢t need it.Then he mention some popular Americans who werenââ¬â¢t schooled such as Abraham Lincoln ,Thomas Jefferson, Carnegie and Rockefeller, saying that these people achieved a circumstantial level of success and wealth without schooling. He makes sure and points out that he is just saying school isnââ¬â¢t needed but that he totally agrees that education is, maybe just not the formal system that we all know today. He explains thatââ¬â¢s the system (schooling) has made us to believe that school is in direct proportions with success, which he says historically isnââ¬â¢t true both financially and intellectually. The question and answer technique he use was very effective because it first makes the writer think and then by following with answering we unknowing accept and believe his argument. His use of popular A mericans who werenââ¬â¢t schooled is somewhat effective in that once can without a doubt see that some people without school can achieve success but at the same that time can argue that it was a different time and the world has changed and education is much more crucial part of life than it was in the time of Rockefeller and Washington. He used a list to explain that mass schooling was believed to make good people, good citizens and to make each his personal best but this was definitely not so. This list which is actually very effective because its helps the reader to remember and understand main points. He then quotes H. L. Mencken who said the aim of public education is not to fill the young of spices with knowledge and awaken them but it is to simply reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardize citizenry to put down dissent and originality .From this quote Gatto wants us to take what Mencken said seriously but coming from a sat irist, it lacks effectiveness. Gatto then goes on to speak about James Bryant Conant who was the president of Harvard for twenty years, world war two poison gas specialists the principal of Colubine High Colorado and the person who introduce standardized testing into the school system. He mention Conant to show a man who had very little background on education influenced it in a big way which was somewhat effective but at the same time could have been considered confusing and misplaced.Another reason for mentioning Conant was to introduce Inglis who believes the reason for school was to stem mass, incurable division so that the underclassââ¬â¢s can never integrate as a dangerous whole. Gatto list what Inglis found to be the purpose of schooling which was: the adjustive or adaptive function, the integrating function, the diagnostic and directive function, the differing function, the selective function and the propaedeutic function. This list was as said before very effective becau se it goes in depth and explains to the reader giving the reader more insight on what the writer is trying to delineate. He starts off his closing points of his argument with the words ââ¬Å"There now you have it. Now you know. â⬠Which somewhat disparages the reader and give a cocky and conceitedness about the writer which can push the reader away from agreement with what he is saying. In this closing argument he says that mandatory schooling had no other objective but to; dumb people down, separate us by classes, encourage us to be lazy not to think at all and to create non-stop consumers. He said that school has turned our children into addicts and it is no accident he quotes Plato and Rousseau to show this. They described our schools as factories in which the raw products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned and built to specification laid down. He said it is obvious what these specifications are; lack of maturity, easy divorce laws, easy credit and easy questions. He u sed very effective rhetorical strategies by comparing children to raw products and schools to factories which gave us images and made his writing more understandable. He concludes by saying that the good news is now that we understand the logic behind modern schooling, its tricks and traps are fairly easy to avoid. He said the answer is to teach own to be leaders and adventurers. He says before we can do this we have to understand thatââ¬â¢s schools are laboratories of experimentation on young mind, drill centers for the habits and cooperate society demands. He said that mandatory education serves children only accidentally and the real purpose is to make them servants. He said that the answer is just to let children manage themselves. This closing paragraph was very ambiguous, it was effect in the imagery give with his metaphors but at the same time the answer to the entire thing was bland. After all that he had to say it seems no real solution was given to the problem, which show s he is not very solution oriented and causes his entire article to lose effectiveness. Court observstion - Essay Example The court demonstrate great power relation in the exercise of its jurisprudence, this is symbolized by the setting of its procedures, to the architecture of the courtroom, the procedures, the presentation of oneself from the judges to the defendants. This is illustrated as stated below: The Architecture: this comprises of the structure of the courtroom in relation with the power relation within the courtroom, the judges position was raised above the rest with the depicting high authority of the judge towards the other members. This does not accommodate equal power distribution among the participants. The fundamental architecture design of courtroom, complimented by precisely calculated use and placement of furniture, did not accommodate equal power distribution among all courtroom participants (Carlen, 1976, pg50). Instead, such architectural features awarded the presiding judged with the position with the most superior power (Carlen, 1976, pg50). The judges place was elevated making the defendant inferior to the judge, the judges dock was the highest positioning of the courtroom having it also centrally placed, ritualized the judges position as equal and non-partisan to any side. The defendants dock was placed isolated with a police officer standing beside the dock this showed the position of defence as the case was to proceed. The furniture in the courtroom is set that the occupants are facing and focused on the witness box which is placed at a lower level than any other furniture item allowing all the members of the courtroom to have clear focus on the witness (Greenberg, 1976, pg87). Arguably, while looking down upon defendant extents intimidation to witness, which makes them to understand their position in the power hierarchy of the courtroom ensuring clear conscious of the need to comply with the laid down system of the will and codes of the court. The presentation: the judges presence was followed by a peculiar silence depicting authority,

Classic Hollywood Cinema Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words - 1
Classic Hollywood Cinema - Essay Example This essay prompts readers to revise Bordwells contention in a certain way. Movies have an emotional appeal that transcend gender, because these movies both demonstrate the second-class status of women in society, although Citizen Kane (1941) has shown womens subtle struggles in fighting their patriarchal society. In Citizen Kane (1941) and Shane (1953), men are the more powerful and stronger gender than women. Through a subjective camera, Welles makes the audience feel that they are breaking and entering a mans innermost property, with the ââ¬Å"No Trespassingâ⬠sign framing the psychological intrusion into Kanes most-prized property, the Xanadu estate. Welles combines camera tilt with lap dissolves to shoot the high gate and focus on the large steel ââ¬Å"Kâ⬠sign on top of the gate. This sign stands for Kanes perception of himself as a human being and a ââ¬Å"man,â⬠where he is superior to his women and the people around him. In Shane, Joe (Van Heflin) and Shane work together on the ranch. They swing their axes together, as if in the harmony of brotherhood and masculinity. Their control over their environment also indicates their control over society. Through alternating shots, Stevens depicts the strength of men in the physical and psychological sense. Shane further demo nstrates the patriarchal culture of the setting through the rough-and-tumble way that men resolve their conflicts. During this time, law and order do not concretely exist yet, because America is in its ââ¬Å"becomingâ⬠stage. The West is divided, where ranchers and homesteaders, or ââ¬Å"squattersâ⬠as ranchers call them, are in conflict over property rights. They cannot resolve their land dispute over rational discussion, since they hate to give concessions to each other. They desire a zero-sum game, where one wins and other loses. This kind of thinking is a facet of realism, where anarchy drives

Response paper - Essay Example The readings highlight various plights that citizens in war-torn regions go through and the various freedoms denied by their governments for failing to uphold human right concerns. The readings are is important in understanding and emphasizing the need for other developing nations to step up and calm the situation. One can agree with the deliberations and conclusion drawn by the then US president Bush that the killing was, in fact, a massacre in one of the readings. The case of various human rights violations is not knew in the public domain. The cases are largely due to government negligence or failure to effectively use the information gathered by intelligence. Through analysis, the recent terrorism killings in Kenya amplify these concerns. In my view very human been irrespective of race, ethnic, religious or political affiliation deserves the right to be protected by the government and live in a secure nation. Although the readings have to deal much with the plight in many develop ing nations, they are not spared either when it comes to such concerns. There have been many incidences that the citizens particularly in Europe have laid blame on government security agencies for various extradition killing. Thus, the readings offer more knowledge human rights concern across the globe. Nonetheless, one can argue that the human rights and protection has improved in recent past. As exemplified in the readings, various aspects such globalization has been a big contributor to this significant transformation in human rights protection (Howard-Hassmann, 56). Thorough critical analysis, globalization has opened the world today and coupled with enhanced technology, the world is more aware of the concerns of citizens around them. Republic of China Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words
Republic of China - Essay Example What makes all of this even more amazing is how little the average westerner knows about the lives, economic, social, and political, of 1.6 billion people. Every now and again, we read in the news about how China offers a great vacation, we see a "Free Tibet" sticker on the back of a car, or we notice that our newest gadget or piece of clothing was made in China. If one reads the right newspapers, they might think that Communist China is on the verge of collapse and massive democratic reforms are just a few years away. Upon closer inspection, however, this is clearly not the case. This paper will argue that the prospects for massive democratic reforms in China are very poor. It will do this by arguing that there is very little internal economic or social impetus for political change and Chinese leaders are unlikely to be swayed by Western Nations into instituting democratic reforms. Despite the fact that the Communist Party in China will remain relatively stable into the foreseeable future, there are still many problems that the party needs to address if it is to maintain it's stronghold in China. One of the primary reasons why one may think that the Communist party is likely to become more democratic in the near future is the success of the economic reforms, which began in 1978. According to Tony Saich, the Chinese government did three very important things in 1978 which would allow for future the future growth of the economy and allow for greater interaction with the rest of the world. First, economic modernization was made central to all party work. Ideology and class struggle were down-played and policy-making became more pragmatic, summed up in the slogan 'practice is the sole criterion for testing truth' and corresponding policy line of 'correcting mistakes wherever they are discovered.' Second, despite the plenum's decision to forget about the past and concentrate on the future, the new 'practice' slogan was used both at the plenum and subsequently to reverse a whole series of previous political judgmentsThird, the plenum formed the source for a new policy direction that gradually increased the influence of market forces in the Chinese economy.4 Of course, the economic reforms were very complex and continue to evolve to this day, and include entry into the World Trade Organization. Whole books have been written about this single process, needless to say, the economic reforms have had a major impact. Author Andrew Walder writes that, China's post-Mao economic reforms have generated rapid and sustained economic growth, unprecedented rises in real income and living standards, and have transformed what was once one of the world's most insular economies into a major trading nation.5 In a speech to the Fourth International Investment Forum, Gregory Chow said Since economic reform started in China in 1978, there has been a remarkable growth in GDP, to the order of 9.5 percent per year on average. What accounts for this tremendous success To answer in one sentence, the Chinese government has adopted institutions and policies that enable the resourceful Chinese people and foreign friends to unleash their energy to develop the Chinese economy. The farmers became energetic and productive since the 1979. The township and village enterprises were the most dynamic element for growth in the 1980s and early 1990s. Many private and foreign

The Concept of the Soul, by Plato Research Paper - 1
The Concept of the Soul, by Plato - Research Paper Example d "appetite." In an elaboration to this, it was assumed that not all the desires are part of the belief and therefore they had association with reason. All the part that form ones soul have certain desires within them, but when it comes to the appetitive or the spirited part of the soul then these desires are not merely constituted by belief or the decision making/ choices that is linked to good. The passion in these elements sprouts from independent faiths differentiating between what is good or bad. When it comes to the appetite, this is due to the arousal of desires that occur as a reaction to the hormonal or other events that take place inside the body. Lastly, the spirited part of the soul is because of the routine response that develops during the course of ones upbringing. Plato in his book Phaedrus, Plato explains this Tripartite Soul in detail. In this book he describes the human soul which is made up of three elements that follow three specific classes that prevail in the society of a fair city containing justice. If individuallyjustice comprises of balancing these three elements in such a way that the precise relationship is developed that is based on power. All this leads to a person that contains ruling with reasoning, reason that takes help from spirit, and also develop a satisfying appetite Platos Theory of the soul is the basic origin point of the Theory of the State. In this theory, Plato claims that a person who is happy is apparently a just/fair person. In the other words this canbe better explained by saying that a content person is one who is governed by reason. Thus "Plato and Aristotle each had a view of human nature that assigned reason a central role." (Kupperman, 59) Plato believed that that soul is comprised of the three constituents that enlighten the human: Reason, Emotion, and Appetite which I previously mentioned. It should be noted that Reason contains the utmost and supreme value whereas the remaining two are considered to be as

The current state of HRM In Saudi Arabia. The impacts of motivation on Research Proposal
The current state of HRM In Saudi Arabia. The impacts of motivation on workers and staff, which encourage employees to work In Saudi private sector - Research Proposal Example The current state of HRM in Saudi Arabia is characterized by a number of features. HRM covers all organizational levels and functions, and has already become a definitive ingredient of the process of management within organizations (Randhawa 2009). HRM is inherently people-oriented, which means that human resource managers are concerned with employees as members of a separate organizational group and as individuals (Randhawa 2009). Finally, HRM is equally pervasive, challenging, and essential for the future of organizations (Randhawa 2009). The complexity of HRM issues is difficult to underestimate, and the current research holds a promise to clarify these issues and support the development of efficient HRM strategies and solutions. The current research into HRM is associated with numerous limitations. More often than not, scholarly research defines HRM too narrowly, leaving numerous issues beyond the boundaries of learning (Lewin, Mitchell & Sherer 2008). This is one of the reasons why the given study will explore ââ¬Å"The impacts of motivation on workers and staff, which encourage employees to work in Saudi private sectorâ⬠. The proposed research will aim at clarifying the factors that motivate workers in Saudi Arabia to work in the private sector. The proposed research will aim at clarifying the factors that motivate workers in Saudi Arabia to work in the private sector. The researcher expects that the proposed study will help private sector enterprises in Saudi Arabia to develop effective HR strategies and attract prospective workforce, which will help organizations to improve their performance and strengthen their competitive position. 2.2. Will your research be industry-based? - Industry-based approach: the proposed research will utilize the benefits of industry-based approach. The petrochemical industry in Saudi Arabia will serve the principal object of analysis. The choice of the petrochemical industry is proved by the fact that (1) it is one of the most important industrial sectors in Saudi Arabia and (2) it combines the features of public and private ownership. For example, 70% of SABIC is being currently owned by the government, with the remaining 30% distributed among private owners (SABIC 2011). As a result, the petrochemical industry exemplifies one of the most attractive objects of organizational analysis in the context of motivation and its implications for the Saudi workforce. - The organization to consider: SABIC will serve the central object of the analysis for the proposed research. The choice of SABIC is not accidental. First, SABIC is the largest non-oil company in the Middle Eastern region and is included in the list of the top five manufacturers of petrochemical products in the world (SABIC, 2011). The size of the company and its profitability provide a wealth of opportunities for researching its workforce and motivation issues in the workplace. Second, SABIC considers itself as a company, which invests heav ily in the development of sophisticated training and development strategies for its employees. According to SABIC (2011), the company is dedicated to its people, enjoys detecting and developing talents, whereas its HR department has recently undergone a serious change. Thus, the company seems to possess vast training and development potential. Ultimately, little is known of what attracts individuals in Saudi Arabia to work in private sector companies. Moreover, the body of research concerning motivation in Saudi companies and private sector organizations is increasingly scarce (Al-Eisa, Furayyan, & Alhmeoud 2009). The researcher expects that the proposed study will add to the existing

Software Project Management and Quality Assurance Essay
Software Project Management and Quality Assurance - Essay Example This essay stresses that the paradigm shift in embracing technological changes that take place has changed the face of banking system leading to the introduction of various features in the banking industry through an intermarriage of market factors like competition and customer loyalty. It is through this that banks have had to go along technological track by introducing features like Remote Deposit Capture, Check 21 and many other efficiency-oriented technology-based attributes. Blue Bank Ltd does not want to be left behind the trail but to compete effectively with others in the industry. This paper makes a conclusion that remote deposit capture systems operate in a more or less patent-like mode. In general, instead of customers going physically to the banking halls, the RDC system, in its most simple terms, allows the customer to scan the relevant documents e.g. checks and transmit the scanned images or records to the provided portals. They obtain portal accounts from the bank and use the account for transactions and transmitting the scanned data whenever need arises. In this case, the banks took advantage of the proliferation of business method patents in the late 90s; a fact they claim eliminated any element of risk and uncertainty in the banking industry and allowed them to fully dedicate valuable resources to focusing upon their core business. The adoption and use of RDC system by banks and other banking institutions resulted from the threats that were posed by the previous systems like check-over-the-counter and cash deposit culture. In order for the banks and t he institutions to avoid being thrown out of business out of competition, they had to embrace the culture which would give them a better competitive edge over the other competitors in the industry. (RDC Articles, June 2007, RDC Fraud Threats in RDC Error) There was a serious threat of likelihood of fraud which could be as a result of human mistake or racket made willingly. The RDC system does not reduce part of this threat either. Inn the case of cash deposit system, the check would be presented to the party giving payment, but when the check is in the very hands of the public or businesses that should be receiving them it poses a danger of duplication by being scanned in and or redeposit into the bank especially if the original check numbers and figures or amounts are changed. Another case would be where criminals take advantage of the new RDC environment thus taking checks away from the original payee, or presentment of the scanned checks through other banks which may lead to omission or change of vital information. When millions of checks are in the hands of the public, it is easier for criminals to create fraudulent checks, by scanning and editing the original ones.

Female characters from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and from The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy Essay Example for Free
Female characters from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and from The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy Essay Compare the presentation of two female characters, one from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and one from The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy, Pay close attention to their roles as outsiders. In these works of prose fiction, both authors write about women confronted by circumstances that make their lives very difficult. The women are, or become, outsiders of one sort or another. You will need to: show your knowledge of both texts Use quotations to support the points that you make Show a knowledge of the life and times that each author was writing in Show what you understand the term outsider to mean. I am writing an essay comparing Curly`s wife from the novel Of Mice and Men and Rhoda Brook from The Withered Arm. John Steinbeck was born in 1902 and lived until 1968 was an American who lived in California this is where he wrote his novels. He always had jobs on farms during his highschool-years, or, as he was very much interested in science, helped out in local laboratories. After school John went to college at Stanford University but John dropped out of school without a degree to enter journalism in New York. He then returned to California to write novel writer. Of Mice and Men was the first novel that was recognised, Of Mice and Men was first published in 1937. In 1962 John Steinbeck got the Nobel-prize for literature. Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men was a story about two men who move from Ranch to Ranch earning just enough money to last them the week. John Steinbeck wrote this story from experience he also travelled from ranch to ranch so knew what it was like to not have a life and have life plane just dreams to look forward to which were just distance dreams. Steinbeck expresses his feelings on life living on a ranch through Georges character, in the book George was always repeating his story on men living on the ranch and describes them as nobodies. John Steinbeck wrote Of Men and Mice during depression and wrote about two men George and Lenny as the loneliest guys in the world which were like him not going to stay alone they are different and they will achieve there dream and this is what John Steinbeck achieved. Guy swho lived on ranches were usually very lonely but John Steinbeck was not going to be lonely and when too old be useless he wanted to overcome his dream. Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They dont belong no place. They come to a ranch an work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know theyre poundin their tale on some other ranch. They ait got nothing to look ahead to. John Steinbeck then lived in California and wrote Grapes of Wrath a story about people who earned nothing and would work non stop for a slice of bread. Both Steinbecks novels are to do with money and people working so hard to become there dream like Lenny and George their dream was to have their dream house but it was out of their reach and they could not overcome it. Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 and lived until 1928. He lived in Dorset so knew a lot about the place he wrote the withered arm which was set in Dorset during 1825 although Hardy knew a lot about Dorset he set the novel before he was even born. Because the story was set so before his time he had to adapt his knowledge of Dorset to how it was in the 1820s his words had to be old fashioned and include long intense sentences to suit the play in the time it was set. Unlike John Steinbeck, Hardy wrote long sentences with old fashioned words. Thomas Hardy was educated locally and at 16 he worked for an architect. At 22 he went to London to train as architect, he then returned home, he then returned home in 1867 persue his chosen career to write novels. He had even started writing his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady, which was never published. Thomas Hardy wrote about fate and pentimizium, most of his novels were tragedies, and he appeared to grow more pessimistic in later life. He then stopped writing novels and returned to writing poetry. Thomas Hardy wrote the withered arm of which is his best known novel The withered arm DESCRIPTION OF STORY. Both the authors write about women confronted by circumstances that make their lives very difficult. The women are outsiders and are not loved and want a better life. Of Mice and Men written by john Steinbeck has a woman in, in the story her name is never spoken of she is referred to as Curlys wife as though she is his woman. She is the only woman on the ranch so is an outsider, she has no one to relate to. Curlys wife is presented in the Story Of Mice and Men as a tart or a flirt her clothing and her body language create a flirty atmosphere. Her clothing is very tarty she wears red clothing and red makeup and red was the colour usually worn by prostitutes so she is wearing these tarty clothes for attention. Quote Curlys wife description She wants to be looked at, her husband Curly is not giving her the attention she needs and she is feeling lonely and apart from the world, on her own and wants a friend or to be loved. Her husband Curly also lives on the Ranch and treats his wife as an outsider, curly doesnt love his wife he just treats her as a sex object. The withered arm written by Thomas Hardy also has a woman in Rhoda Brook is made to feel as an outsider. Rhoda isnt married and doesnt have a partner, in those days to be a single mum was very unlikely so the people in her town thought she was a witch so she didnt have many friends. Rhoda lives with her twelve year old son in father lodges cottage, Rhoda is very in love with Farmer Lodge but he has a very beautiful wife which Rhoda is extremly jealous of. The thin woman who had not spoken was joined by a boy of twelve or thereabout. Rhoda Brook is not very attractive she is pale, tall and thin. Unlike Curlys wife she isnt beautiful so cannot use her beauty to attract men and get peoples attention. Rhoda is very jealous of beautiful woman so unlike Curlys wife, Rhoda is around other woman so isnt an outsider in that prospective she is an outsider because of men, she is neglected by men and is unlucky in love. Rhodas loneliness and emotional feelings only aid to the boys like Curlys wife she wants to be loved and cared about. Rhoda works on a farm as a milking woman. Curlys wife doesnt work she is just a housewife for Curly. Curlys wife was very much like George and Lennie they all had a dream but none of them came true. Curlys wifes dream was to be a movie star but she could not live her dream because she met Curly, they fell in love and he took her away from the natural world and placed her in a lonely neglected environment on the ranch. On the Ranch she is never spoken to because the men on the ranch dont want curly thinking there is something going on with her wife and another man because he would kick them off the ranch. Curly and Rhoda are very different in appearance but very similar in personality and would be feeling very alike. Rhoda is very modest and lifeless unlike Curlys wife who seems to be very outgoing and flirtatious.
Performance Analysis of Reusable Software Systems
Performance Analysis of Reusable Software Systems Monika Kalotra Dr. Kuljit Kaur Abstract: To improve the quality of software system, there is a need to eliminate or reduce the rework. Software reuse is one of the solution proposed for it. Software reuse involves reuse of existing software modules, also called reusable software components, while creating new software systems. In the context of software reuse, it is important to evaluate the performance of reusable software components as performance is a crucial factor in the selection of any third party or existing software components. This paper shows a comparative study on the performance analysis of four reusable software components-hibernate, spring, IBatis and EclipseLink. This paper presents the way to build a comparative analysis that shows the average execution time, average heap usage, and average CPU utilization of the reusable software components using java based VisualVM tool. Keywords: Performance, Software Reusability, java framework, CBSD. I. INTRODUCTION In 1968, to overcome the software crisis Mcllroy proposed the concept of software [1]. To build large reliable software systems in a controlled and cost effective way, he pointed towards the effective use of reusable software components [2]. The results of software reuse to improve the productivity of the programmer because with the reuse we can produce high quality software at a minimum cost and deliver it within a short span of time [6]. Reused software is of better quality than new software because it has been already tried and tested in other systems. There are two approaches for reuse of code: develop the code with reuse or develop the code for reuse. In either case, there is a need of measuring the quality of the reusable piece of software [8]. The reuse of program/software is a common technique which attempts to save time and cost by reducing duplicate work. This paper presents a comparative study on the performance of four reusable software components hibernate, spring, IBatis, EclipseLink. These are Object Relational Mapping based framework. They can be used in developing a Java application. These components map the java classes to relational tables in database with the help of SQL queries. Several SQL queries are executed on these components at the backend. In order to measure the execution time, CPU utilization of every executed SQL query, performance benchmarks are used. We make a comparison between these reusable components using java VisualVM tool. II. RELATED WORK To evaluate software reusability two approaches are used: qualitative and empirical [11]. The qualitative methods require significantly manual efforts and depend on a subjective value. Empirical methods depend on the objective data that can be collected with the help of some simulation tool. The performance metrics of component based systems, which are the challenging properties to predict and measure [4]. They have performed three case studies on performance analysis of real-time systems using Deep Compass framework. For performance analysis, software toolkit called CARAT is used for model synthesis and simulation. The performance of prediction methods based on models that support a development process from top to bottom, where developers create a new architecture and software components [3]. These methods rarely integrating existing components in the software architecture models. While there are many tools for performance measurement and profiling existing software components cannot be directly tested the performance when integrated into a model. A systematic approach proposed to software reuse are built to reuse and build by recycling [5]. The problems in software engineering is not a lack of reuse, but a lack of systematic reuse. They know how to do, but they do it informally. The concept of reuse is used to reduce the cost, effort and execution time for software development. Re also raises the productivity, maintainability and reliability of the software, which has been evaluated before in other software. Reusable software components framework is proposed. Empirical observations was made by applying the framework to the recording system C. The result clearly shows that the proposed framework to reduce the work of software developers, who needed a bit of effort to build reuse or build by recycling. The most complex components in the software development process is the database. The performance analysis of persistence framework explained in [15]. The complexity increases when the perspective differs of the interacting components. The performance comparison of two persistence frameworks namely Hibernate and IBatis using a banking database. Both the framework maps JavaBeans to SQL statements using a XML descriptor. The online banking application case study is used. Performance is measured using a java program which uses basic SQL operations on the banking database and the Round Trip Time is calculated and used to measure the way these mapping tools perform under various situations. The performance of both of these tools in single and multi-user environments are evaluated. Hibernate performs better because it supports lazy fetching and mapping associations. To develop the performance of software applications is a major problem in software applications. The solution is to avoid the assessment of late performance [10]. A prediction approach to provide the best solution to solve the problem. Three types of approaches to performance prediction used to know the measurement approach, the approach based on a model and a mixed approach. The main goal is to improve the performance of the software. Steffen and Ralf reported five factors that impact the performance of software component is the implementation components, resource conflicts, use patterns, platform deployment and required services. Quantitative approaches related to the objectives of the performance engineering of software to evaluate the software, which by focusing on quality factors of performance such as response time and throughput. In the end result, the hybrid approach is the best approach. III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY A. Data Collection To analyze the performance of reusable software components, we have downloaded some jar files relevant to these reusable software components. A Java application can be started with a set of jar files. For implementing various libraries and plug-ins in java applications these jar files are used. The various jar files being used are mysql-connector-java, hibernate-core, hibernate-validator, jboss-logging-3.1.3.ga-sources, javassist, org.springframework, org.springframework.Expression, ibatis-dao, ibatis.jar, javassist, IBatis-common and eclipselink. B. Performance Metrics: VisualVM is a tool that provides interface for viewing detailed information about Java based applications [7]. VisualVM organizes data about the JVM software and presents the information that enables the developer to quickly view data on multiple Java applications. Java VisualVM can be used by Java application developers to monitor and improve java applications performance. There are four metrics used to analyze the performance of reusable software components. a). CPU Utilization: Using this metric, you can see how much of CPU is being consumed by database activities. CPU utilization is used to track CPU performance when running a specific piece of code. It is measured in %. b). Total Classes loaded: VisualVM counts the total number of classes loaded for any java application. c). Heap used: It shows how much of the heap is currently used by a java application. It is measured in MB. d). Threads: Athreadis a programs path of execution. Two types of threads are used: live thread and daemon thread. i. Live Thread also called used thread. User thread are threads created by programmer. ii. Daemon Threads are called service provider threads and run parallel to your code. When Java Virtual Machine finds no user threads all daemon thread terminate immediately. Some reusable Software Components are used to analyze the performance and make a comparison between them. A. Hibernate In 2001, Hibernate was developed by Gavin King. Hibernate is a tool for object-relational mapping. Object-relational mapping is a programming method for mapping Java objects to relational model where Java classes are mapped to tables [6] database. This is an open source persistent framework. There is a persistence framework powerful high performance and query service for Java application. Hibernate fills the gap and establish a connection between a Java application and a database. Hibernate uses the OO approach based on Java and binds known as POJO (plain old java objects) into a single object and table cards in a database java classes [14]. B. Spring Spring is a free and open source framework that offers many features for developers. It was jointly developed by Rod Johnson and Juergen Hoeller in June 2003 is also a base ORM framework. Spring Framework aims to make application development enterprise Java easier to use and promote good programming by allowing a POJO-based programming model. Important features are the Inversion of Control, AOP and Spring MVC [12]. Spring Framework allows us to manage the relationships between different parts of the project to loose coupling between modules. C. IBatis This is an open source Java-based framework for ORM mapping data. In 2001, IBatis developed by Clinton Begin. IBATIS is a persistence framework that allows the mapping between SQL databases and Java objects. Mappings are separated from the application logic by wrapping SQL statements in XML configuration files. IBATIS is a lightweight frame. IBatis mapping parameters and results between class properties and the columns of the database table [9]. D. EclipseLink The EclipseLink provides object relational persistence solution with additional features for developers. EclipseLink is also a focused framework for ORM progressed and provides support for relational databases. EclipseLink is a source object persistence and transformation of the open object framework. It provides execution capabilities that reduce development efforts and maintenance of an application. The software provides an extensible framework that allows developers to interact with many data services [13]. IV. RESULTS A. Simulation Environment Performance of Hibernate, Spring, EclipseLink and IBatis is measured using a java simulation tool. These four reusable software components perform basic SQL operations on the music database and the execution time is calculated and used to measure the way these mapping tools perform under various situations. The aim is to get the time from generation of SQL to querying music database and then getting back the data. The conditions were the same for all these components. The execution time of application is computed by applying select, insert database operations on these four reusable software components. For this purpose, a set of SQL queries is executed against music database. The performance of Hibernate, Spring, IBatis and EclipseLink is monitored under multi user environment because java supports multithreading environment. The tests were conducted in the following environment: Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7, Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, Memory: 2GB. To monitor a java application, the parameters that we have used are CPU Utilization, Classes loaded, No. of Threads executed and Heap used by reusable software component. The experimental results of these software components are represented using graphical charts. In this we have considered select and insert sql queries as two benchmarks. For the first Select Benchmark we have used these SQL queries are: TABLE 1. For Select Query These SQL select queries are executed at the backend in the database. When we run these queries it shows how much CPU is utilized, how many classes are loaded, how much heap is used and how much time it takes to execute the java application. According to the average graphs, it is clear that IBatis perform better for select query because its development time is less as compared to other components. IBatis is a data mapper i.e. it maps results sets to the object in java application while other components map the columns of database tables with the java classes. IBatis makes use of SQL which is database dependent. According to the graphs, IBatis has less average CPU utilization, less execution time and consumes less heap because stored procedures are used. A stored procedures is a group of SQL statements that created and stored on database. The stored procedures improved the heap usage and improve the performance of application. IBatis loaded less no. of classes because of lazy loading and another reason is multiple threads are executed simultaneously. The insignificant code is reduced to access a database. The results of select query benchmarks are shown in fig1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Fig 1. Execution time Fig 2: Average Heap Used Fig 3: Total no. Classes loaded Fig 4: No. of Threads Executed Fig 5: CPU usage The insertion operation is regarded as the second benchmark. The insert operation is used to insert one or more rows in a database table. The first command of language data manipulation performed immediately after the creation of this table is the insertion expression. For the second Insert Benchmark we have used these SQL queries: TABLE 2. For Insert Query According to the average graphs, the Charts shown that IBatis performs better for insert benchmark. The average execution time is large, maximum heap is used because multiple records are inserted in to database tables. The only operation in which spring consumes more time is for the insert operation. The number of threads executed to run a java application in IBatis is less than hibernate because we donââ¬â¢t have to create the separate session for threads to insert objects into the database. The sessions in IBatis enhance the performance by reducing the number of times the application needs to access the data. In this case, larger number of classes are loaded in EclipseLink than IBatis but lesser than hibernate. EclipseLink consumes more CPU with respect to the other components. For every insert operations so much effort was necessary on querying, IBatis handles this query in a better way. The results of insert query benchmarks are shown in fig 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Fig 6: Execution time Fig 7: CPU utilization Fig 8: Heap Used. Fig 9: No. of Threads Executed. Fig 10. Number of classes loaded V. CONCLUSION This paper presents the comparative analysis of four reusable software components namely hibernate, spring, IBatis and EclipseLink. Reusability allows us to use existing software system rather than building them from scratch. Three performance benchmarks namely SELECT, INSERT and JOIN queries are used in order to measure the performance of reusable software components. These benchmarks were applied on these four reusable software components to analyze their performance and to make a comparison among them. The performance was analyzed using these performance metrics such as CPU utilization, heap Used, number of threads executed, execution time and number of classes loaded with the help of VisualVM. According to our results in SELECT and INSERT queries, IBatis showed outstanding results as compared to other reusable components because it uses less average CPU utilization because of multithreading. IBatis consumes less heap because caching in IBatis improves the performance by caching a ll the results in the mapping statement and reducing the unnecessary trips to the database. IBatis loaded less number of classes because IBatis is a light weight component. REFERENCES [1]. The Braden Scale :: The Braden Scale
The Braden Scale is a clinically valued tool that is used to predict pressure ulcers. The scale is broken down into six sub-scales; these subscales determine the risk factors associated with skin break down. Multiple aspects of a patients condition are examined, (sensory perception, moisture, activity, mobility, nutrition, friction and shear), to limit the patients susceptibility for skin break down. Since pressure ulcers are a financial burden and a cause for patient discomfort and possible infection, predicting and assessing risk has enormous benefit and significance. This study was conducted to determine the validity of the mobility subscale of the Braden scale. The subscale of mobility is defined as the patients ability to change and control body positions. The research was conducted in a veteran hospital, and participants ranged in age from 45-95 years. The tools that were used were the Braden scale and actigraphy which measures movement. It was placed on the patientââ¬â¢s non-dominant ankle in order to observe the larger movements of the patient. The researcher defined each score in relation to movement. They hypothesized that the increase in movement would cause an increase in score of the mobility subscale. As predicted, the mobility subscale scores increased as movement increased. A similar study to predict risk of ulcers in pediatric patients was conducted to test the validity of using the Braden Q scale. A modified version of the Braden Scale, only containing three subscales, was used to utilize a shorter comparable tool. The Braden Q Scale is a revision of the Braden scale that is applicable in pediatrics. The two tools that were used were: the Braden Q Scale and skin assessments. The sample study consisted of 322 patients who were on bed rest for at least 24 hours. The patients were observed three times per week, for two weeks, and then weekly until discharge, which totaled 887 individual assessments. It was determined that both the Braden Q, as well as the modified Braden Scale was adequate tools to measure skin breakdown. Both studies modified the original Braden Scale to test the validity of their modifications. The first study was based solely on the mobility scale of the Braden scale, while the second study used three of the original sub-scales to prove comparable results to the overall scale. Both studies were designed to simplify the Braden scale in order to determine the effectiveness of the subscales alone.

Karl Marx Essays -- essays research papers
Karl Marx was the creator of Marxism and a new type of economy and government. His ideas were appealing to the working class people and emphasized the community rather than the individual. His theories spawned communism and his ideas still remain in effect in some modern day countries. Marxââ¬â¢s ideas originate from his experiences in Europe and his collaboration with Frederich Engels. In addition, Marx's work seems to be more of a criticism of Hegelian and other philosophy, than as a statement of his own philosophy. While Hegel felt that philosophy explained reality, Marx felt that philosophy should be made into reality, a hard thing to do. He thought that one must not just look at and inspect the world, but must try to transform the world, much like Jean Paul Sartre's view that "man must choose what is best for the world; and he will do so." Marx is unique from other philosophers in that he chooses to regard man as an individual, a human being. This is evident in his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. There, he declares that man is a "natural being" who is endowed with "natural [and] vital powers" that "exist in him as aptitudes [and] instincts." Humans simply struggle with nature for the satisfaction of man's needs. From this struggle comes man's awareness of himself as an individual and as something separate from nature. So, he seeks to oppose nature. He sees that...

Carson McCullers - Exploring the Depths of the Human Heart :: Biography Biographies Essays
Carson McCullersà - Exploring the Depths of the Human Heart à à à à "With poignant insight and compassion Carson McCullers (1917-1967) wrote of human loneliness, unfulfilled love, and the frailty of the human heart." à Of all the characters in the work of Carson McCullers, the one who seemed to her family and friends to be most like the author herself was Frankie Addams: the vulnerable, exasperating, and endearing adolescent of The Member of the Wedding who was looking for the "we of me." However, Carson once said that was, or became in the process of writing, all the characters in her work. This is probable true of most real writers who often with pain draw from their unconscious what the rest of us would just as soon keep hidden from ourselves and others. So accept the fact that Carson was not only Frankie Addams but J.T. Malone, Miss Amelia, and Captain Penderton; but familiarity with the work that she was not able to finish would only be only a partial clue to who and what she was. This was not simply because she had not finished what she had to say, but that she was the artist, and as she often quoted, "Nothing human is alien to me." à So many people were unable to acknowledge Carson's constant closeness to death, and many more resented her for trying to make them face it, but she had lived through enough close calls to convince everyone that she was indestructible. à Carson saw her life one way and those intimate with her often perceived it differently. Intentionally or unintentionally, she added to the confusion about herself. An interviewer was more likely to be cannily interviewed than to extract an interview from her. Besides, she simply liked a good story and frequently embellished the more amusing ones of her life. The one person who singled out this quality in a particularly loving way was Tennessee Williams in his unpublished essay "Praise to Assenting Angels": à The great generation of writers that emerged in the twenties, poets such as Eliot, Crane, Cummings, and Wallace Stevens, prose-writers such as Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Katharine Anne Porter, has not been succeeded or supplemented by any new figures of corresponding stature with the sole exception of the prodigious young talent that first appeared in 1940 with the publication of her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.

Adaptation of W.S. Maughamââ¬â¢s novel The painted veil Essay
Shortly after meeting earnest, socially awkward bacteriologist Walter Fane at a party, vivacious, vain, and vacuous London socialite Kitty Garstin enters into a loveless marriage with him at the urging of her domineering mother. Following a honeymoon in Venice, the couple go to Shanghai, where the doctor is stationed in a government lab studying infectious diseases. Kitty meets Charles Townsend, a married British vice consul, and the two engage in a clandestine affair. When Walter discovers his wifeââ¬â¢s infidelity, he seeks to punish her by threatening to divorce her on the grounds of adultery if she doesnââ¬â¢t accompany him to a small village in a remote area of China, where he has volunteered to treat victims of an unchecked cholera epidemic sweeping through the area. Kitty begs to be allowed to divorce him quietly and he agrees, provided Townsend will leave his wife Dorothy and marry her. When she proposes this possibility to her lover, he declines to accept, and she is c ompelled to travel to the mountainous inland region with her husband. They embark upon an arduous, two-week-long overland journey that would be considerably faster and much easier if they traveled by river, Upon their arrival in Mei-tan-fu, she is distressed to discover they will be living in near squalor, far removed from everyone except their cheerful neighbor Waddington, a British deputy commissioner living with a young Chinese woman in relative opulence. See more:à The 3 Types of Satire Essay Walter and Kitty barely speak to each other and, except for a cook and a Chinese soldier assigned to guard her, she is alone for long hours. After visiting an orphanage run by a group of French nuns, Kitty volunteers her services, and she is assigned to work in the music room. She is surprised to learn from the Mother Superior that her husband loves children, and in this setting she begins to see him in a new light as she learns what a selfless and caring person he can be. When he sees her with the children, he in turn realizes she is not the shallow, selfish person he thought her to be. As Walterââ¬â¢s anger and Kittyââ¬â¢s unhappiness subside, their marriage begins to blossom. She soon learns she is pregnant, but is unsure who the father is. Walter ââ¬â in love with Kitty again ââ¬â assures her it doesnââ¬â¢t matter. Just as the local cholera problem is coming under control, ailing refugees from elsewhere pour into the area, forcing Walter to set up a camp outside town. He contracts the disease and Kitty nurses him, but he dies, devastating her. Five years later, while shopping with her young son Walter in London, Kitty meets Townsend by chance on the street. He suggests the two get together and asks young Walter his age, realising from the reply that he could be Walterââ¬â¢s father. Kitty, however, rejects his overtures and walks away. When her son asks who Townsend is, she replies ââ¬Å"No one importantâ⬠. Awards and honors Composer Alexandre Desplat won the 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score Desplat also won an award for Best Original Score from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for both The Painted Veil and The Queen (2006). Edward Norton was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead but lost to Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. The San Diego Film Critics Society honored him for his work in this and The Illusionist and Down in the Valley. The London Film Criticsââ¬â¢ Circle nominated Toby Jones Best British Supporting Actor of the Year. ***Questions for discussion: 1. Give the description of the main heroin Kitty paying attention to her inner changes during the story film. Kitty Fane is a beautiful young woman. Kitty is charming and socially adept, but vacuous. She is vivacious, vain, spoiled and selfish. She doesnââ¬â¢t love her husband Walter, she considers him a boring, uncheerful, too serious and unthoughtful man. With him Kitty is unhappy. But during the film we can see how the main heroin changes. She learns from the Mother Superior that her husband loves children. And she begins to see him in a new light. She learns, that other people in Mei-tan-fu consider him a selfless and caring person. He is very kind. He is devoted to his work. He takes a great care of his patients. And Kitty understands, that she didnââ¬â¢t notice the good qualities of his husband. Kitty learns to respect her husband. She falls in love with her husband. She is selfish no more. She is very attentive to her husband, because she understands, that she has made a mistake. She takes care of orphans and she likes it. Kitty loves her husband and is happy now. 2. Express your attitude to Walterââ¬â¢s reaction. (to treachery) Was it quite usual or was it a bit unexpectedly? Why did he prefer to behave in this very way? Such a reaction is unusual and unexpected. Perhaps he prefers to behave in this way, because he wants to show Kitty, that he is no fool. He wants to teach her a lesson. He wants she gets rid of her selfishness and vanity. He wants she answer for her mistakes. 3. And what can you say about Charles Townsend? Is it typical of men to behave in such a way when they feel that something threatens their life or carrier? Are men such cowards indeed? I think that it is typical of many men to behave in such a way when they feel that something threatens their life or carrier. They donââ¬â¢t want to be responsible for their acts. Charles Townsend likes to have a good time with a beautiful woman. But when Kitty says him, that she loves him und wants to be married, he is very frightened of this. Because it can spoil his carrier. I think there a lot of such men in our world. And there are very few men, that are responsible for their acts and behave in an proper manner. Thatââ¬â¢s why Maugham shows us a typical character. 4. How can you interpret the title of the novel film? What did Maugham want to tell us using this title? (à à °Ã ·Ã'â¬Ã ¸Ã' à ¾Ã ²Ã °Ã ½Ã ½Ã °Ã' à ²Ã'Æ'à °Ã »Ã'Å', à £Ã ·Ã ¾Ã'â¬Ã ½Ã'â¹Ã ¹ à ¿Ã ¾Ã ºÃ'â¬Ã ¾Ã ²). At a wedding, a veil is usually white, representing the innocence of the person wearing it. White is pure and has not yet been violated. In the film the veil is painted, which means that it is not an innocent veil the characters are wearing. Maugham used this concept to show how all of society and the people living in it are tainted. 5. The end of the story seems to be rather vivid & emotional. The meeting of two old acquaintances is rather cold full of contempt at least from Kittyââ¬â¢s direction. What are your emotions? Do you feel sorry for Charles or do you despise him as Kitty? Explain. The end of the film is very emotional, but I donââ¬â¢t feel sorry for Charles. I feel contempt to him as Kitty. And he has only himself to blame for this. He was frightened to marry her. He didnââ¬â¢t want to marry her. He was afraid to spoil his career. He left her and didnââ¬â¢t think of her all these years. He behaved as a coward. And he deserves such an attitude.

Employee Representation Essay
The rise of capitalism in industrialized societies ad increase in case of exploitation of employees led to the rise of trade unions.à The trade unions were formed for the purpose of representing employees through preventing exploitation by their employers.à The increased cases of exploitation in terms of wage and other issues that affected employees in organisation, industries and companies led to the formation of trade unions. à The trade unions aim was to improve employees pay and other employment conditions through representing the employees in a collectively bargaining.à The formation of trade unions was initially objected by employers who felt they had a right to exploit the poor since they owned factors of production.à à In todayââ¬â¢s society most employers who understand the role of trade union appreciate the efforts made by trade unions.à à A group of employees may join together to form a trade union and they may seek recognition from their employer (Blyton and Turnbull, 61). Collective bargaining involves the process by which the employer and trade unions discuss and agree on the employment terms and conditions.à The collective bargaining does not normally establish legal relations between the employee and employer. However, the agreement areas which relate to terms and conditions of employment become basis of employment contract.à The employer and employee can then agree on the employment terms as agreed between the employee and trade unions although itââ¬â¢s subject to any changes made between the employee and the employer.à Collective bargaining takes place in firms of all sides.à Good employer-employee relationships contribute to a healthy employer-trade union relationship. The effectiveness if trade unions can only be measured through the outcomes of intervention in employer-employee relationship.à Some trade unions have been known to be dormant and reap money out of employees yet no change is noticed in employees conditions under which they work.à Few trade unions have colluded with employers and oppressed employees after which the employers have supported to the collapse of the trade unions due to breach of contract. A trade union is an independentà body which been formed by individuals who volunteer to form an association whose main goal is to represent and protect the employment, service-related, professional, economic and social rights and interests of the employees.à Employees regards to anyone employed despite the nature of work. The trade unions achieve their set goals though dialogue with employees, association of employees, local government and the government in which trade union exist.à The dialogue is based on consultancy and collective bargaining on issues that are of interest to employees.à All employees are at liberty to join or not to join any ââ¬Å"trade union except members of National Defence Force, National Intelligence Agency and South African secret service (Edwards, 36). Extent to which employee representation through trade unions is effective depends on the nature of employment and size of business or organisation in which the employee is working in.à In small organisations the trade unions have a small scope of employee representation because most dialogue is done directly between the employer and employee.à In such small firms, the trade union efficiency in employee representation can be derived from their ability to negotiate for good pays and payment systems, hours of work, holiday, sick pay and pensions. Trade unions are regulated by labour Relations act. The labour Relations Act applies to all employers, workers, trade unions and employersââ¬â¢ organisations.à However the act does not apply to member of National Defence Force, National Intelligence Agency or South African Secret Service. Trade unions in large firms and organisations enhance the relationship between the employer and employee.à This is because the employees have their chosen representatives who present employee grievances to the trade union.à In large firms and organisations all aspects that concern the employment contract are made known to the trade union for the trade union to be effective. Employees who represent collective needs of employees to employer may face hostility from employers.à In most cases, the employees who stand out to fight for the collective rights of employees have lost their jobs and this has created sense of insecurity among employee leaders. This usually happens when the imposed changes are objected by the employer.à This problem has made employee representation through sponsored trade unions to be effective because trade unions are independent association of volunteers.à Sponsored trade unions, due to absence of fear of the repercussions are able to negotiate with employers, association of employers effectively so the employeesââ¬â¢ interests are addressed (William and Adam Smith, 88). Employee representation through sponsored trade unions has been especially effective while dealing with collective issues that concern all employees in a given state.à The trade unions are mostly made up of radical individuals who are patriotic and committed to the overall objective of addressing employeesââ¬â¢ interests which involve minimum wage of civil servants depending on the standard of living and economic growth or the country. Trade unions have been effective in addressing issues that concern mode of payment for employees to avoid such cases like delayed salaries and wages.à This has led to improved social welfare of the employees.à Trade unions have been known to intervene in cases where organisations and firms have failed to pay their employees in time. à Also, trade unions have intervened in cases where the employees are exploited through low wages.à The employees demand increment of salaries through trade unions.à The trade unions then hold meetings with the employer or association of employers to agree on the fair salary.à The intervention by trade unions had led to great improvement in the labour market and this can be seen through reduced strikes in most countries. In the past, there were few laws that governed issues elated to sick leaves, maternity leaves and general leaves.à The trade unions have been known to contribute greatly to the occupational law through identification of areas where unfair dismissal is applied. Most employees have suffered unfair dismissal from temporary contacts or permanent contract due to inevitable cases like when absenteeism occurs due to sickness and/or maternity leaves.à In small firms, employees have been known to suffer the ill-treatment silently but the presence of trade unions has shown a lot of improvement in the labour industry.à The trade union representative in such a case is allowed by the labour Relations Act to help and present workers in governance and disciplinary hearing when the employees agree (Blyton and Turnbull, 565). Increase in payment demands by employment has in most cases led to termination of employment of the pioneers of the idea.à This has fear among employees who want to maintain their employment.à However, the productivity of laborers decline because of the dissatisfaction with their salaries.à Trade unions therefore hold discussions with employers and they monitor the employerââ¬â¢s compliance with the labour relations Act which involves any law regulating terms and conditions of employment and whether they have honored any agreement that had been made between employer and employee. Employees cannot be able to monitor employer compliance with law due to fear of losing the employment hence employee representation through sponsored trade union ensure adherence by employer to any agreement that is passed concerning employeeââ¬â¢s interest.à Effectiveness is achieved by ensuring employers comply and by reporting any failure by the employer to comply with the law or any made agreement to association of employers or any responsible authority or agency.à Employers are likely to act fast on the agreement when they are under the pressure of trade unions other than when employees are pushing. Employees have a tendency to act on the agreement made between employer and employees because employer acknowledge that trade unions are independent association that are protected and empowered by labour relations act. In countries where racism have been know to have great effect on employment environment especially issues regarding promotion and unfair treatment, trade unions have been known to intervene to ensure fair treat of all individual/employees in countries like US where racist is said to exist in most organisations, employees forward their grievances to trade unions because if they complain or demand justice, the employer may deny them their right or may terminate their contracts or employment. Employees therefore though the trade unions present their grievances to civil command and their discrimination issue is addressed. Employee representation through sponsored trade unions ensures that employers conform to anti-discrimination law; employees with different races, religion age and marital status are treated equally due to follow-up by trade union representative. There have been incidences where the working conditions pose a health hazard to the employees yet the remuneration given cannot cover the extent of risks the employees are exposed.à When individual employees complain of their dissatisfaction with the salary based on the risks the employees are exposed to, the employees may be terminated or may be pressurized to quit the job by the employer on the argument that there is plenty supply of labour.à The trade unions therefore intervene so that the employees are paid in accordance to the risks they are exposed to. Excess supply of labour had led to many employersââ¬â¢ taking advantage of the situation by paying the employees less wage as compared to the amount of work that they do.à Some employees may not even complain of their exploitation by the employer because they fear loosing their long awaited job.à In capitalistic societies, where the few are the owners of factors of production, there is high exploitation of the poor people who supply labour to the industries. The merchant in capitalistic societies pay constant wage which does not account for all the labour hours.à The poor work for more hours.à Trade unions in such situation have been known to be agents of social changes which may be radical.à The trade unions have contributed to the seizure of the habit by ensuring that employees are paid their worth irrespective of their positions.à Trade unions are accredited for presenting the grievances of the poor (Beardwell, 225). In organisation/firms where the employees are many, it becomes very hard to address the individual needs.à Trade unions therefore collect the individual needs and try to apply them to the whole group.à This is especially the case with civil servants who work in various regions of the state in different departments and therefore have different need. The trade unions address those needs by holding discussions with government officials and they may challenge the states labour law if they are to the disadvantage of employees.à The trade union in most countries have been known to cause remarkable changes in labour laws for example, setting the minimum wage that should be earned by any employee depending on the nature of job and category of job. Trade unions are effective more than individual employees especially in presenting individual rights since trade unions enjoy some favour from the industrial relations Bill in 2003.à The trade unions are able to negotiate for the members interests as association of employers. Trade unions contribute to the formation of government policies concerning resource allocations and other matters that concern employees.à Some trade union representatives are incorporated in the government policy making through writing proposals which the government use as guide in making the policies. The proposals consider the government resources and the human resource (employees) needs and make suggestions on how the government can integrate both partiesââ¬â¢ demands given the scarce resources.à Though, even with the support from government through industrial relations Bill 2003, trade unions are faced with challenge of many cases taking long term to be completed.à There have been many pending cases in courts as noted in the Irish government (Beardwell, 225). Trade unions have been delegated many duties that concern employee interests.à However, trade union cannot represent the employees in full capacity to their employers.à This has led to formation of non-union groups in the industries, organisations or firms. These non-union groups are mainly composed of employees who seek to represent the grievances to the employers with an aim of consensus through dialogue.à The formation of non-union groups has been triggered by the disillusionments that have been incurred by many trade unions in Irish government.à The disillusionment is highly attributed by the long period of time that many industrial cases take in labour court.à In fact, the data from Irish government indicate that few races which may be less than ten cases have actually reached the determination stage (William and Adam Smith, 89). Most companies argue that there is scarcity of human resource in their firm and hence thus most times the labour is misused through denial of holiday leave some employees develop health complications due to overworking or work pressure.à Some employees when they report the need to be given lighter job are threatened or are denied the right because of their race, ethnicity or religion.à The employees can then sue the concerned organisation through the sponsored trade union for violation of occupational safety and health act.à This has brought positive results because employees have complied with the occupational safety and health act due to the power that trade union are accorded by the industrial relation Act. Most trade unions have been know to contribute greatly in the health and safety training of employees and employers and have had positive impact on the effectiveness f trade union.à In cases where the trade unions gain favour from employer or association of employers, through recognition, the trade union plans and strategies to address the issues that concern employees become very effective (Blyton,66). Most employers are reluctant to change the working conditions of their employees because they incur extra cost on the firm or organisation.à The employers in such cases do not pay attention to employee suggestions or grievances but intervention of trade unions enhance the situation because most employees are aware of the privileges that have been accorded trade unions by the industrial relations Act, 2003 (Edwards, 35). When an employer wants to introduce a new technology that is likely to affect the employees, the employees object the introduction through trade unions.à Most employers innovate ways in which to reduce operational costs without putting employees needs into consideration.à In most cases, the adoption of the technology requires lay off of some employees and this would have an effect on the employeesââ¬â¢ welfare. The trade union takes up the matter and negotiates with the employer on the impact of the introduction on the economy.à Most employers have been known to balance their interests with the employees due to the effective presentation by trade unions. Strikes are common in many nations.à Strikes usually occur when the employees fail to act as per their agreement or sometimes strikes are done to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the employersââ¬â¢ services or treatment. Most employers have been noted to act very aggressively.à Some employees according ton various studies done in UK have been seen to fire few employees instead and this brought a lot of criticism from employees and public.à Trade unions become very crucial in such cases because they present the employees in court and sue for damages caused by the unfair dismissal of the employees.à In most cases, when the cases in court are taken up by trade unions, they are acted upon very fast other than individual employees because of the recognition of trade unions. Employees are meant to relate with their employers well.à The relationship between employer and employee should portray transparency and commitment by both parties towards the contract that they have entered into.à Good employee-employer relationship enhances the achievement of the organisations or firmââ¬â¢s goal.à When there is dialogue between employer and employee, the need for trade unions becomes insignificant. However, very few employers honour the terms and conditions of the contract according to occupational safety and health and yet they expect the employees to comply with the terms and conditions of the employment.à The conflict of interest between the two parties necessitates the need for an independent association trade union.à Other wise, compliance by both parties would produce positive results and would save time and cost on the firm or organisation incurred in legal proceedings. Most employees in UK have joined trade unions as shown by the government data.à The employees have joined the trade unions because of their recognition for the need of an arbitrator between then and the employees.à The employees can only be presented if they are members of trade union.à The membership is voluntary for all except members of defense. When most employees retire, there is tendency by the employers to fail to pay pensions.à Trade unions have noted to be effective in claiming the employeesââ¬â¢ rights especially pension funds.à Most domestic jobs however do not have pension schemes for example the house keeping, shopkeeper attendant. This has limited the performance of trade unions because however much they want to assist the employees, the nature of job cannot favour the intervention of trade unions. Some employees have been known to abuse the trade unions power by failing to report of their absence from job and this limited the effectiveness of trade unions in presenting the employees.à Negligence by employees through for example, deliberately destroying a companyââ¬â¢s wealth or resources like lighting a cigarette in a petrol station by an employee, cannot be protected.à The employers sometimes use the trade unions as puppet to push for their needs and interests.à This has led to ineffectiveness of many trade unions which have been disregarded by employers (Blyton, 33). The trade unions can liaise with the labour departments in many states.à The relationship between trade unions and labour departments has produced good fruits in many countries because it has increased recognition and the effectiveness of the unions.à The trade unions are known to gain favour from most governments hence the grievances of employees are addressed fast when they are represented through a trade union. The employee presentation through sponsored trade union can only be effective up to the point where the court ruling has been done.à Beyond court ruling the employee presentation through trade union then becomes insignificant.à The employees have to adhere to the court ruling whether it favours the employer or employee.à Most employees have face disillusionment after the trade unions efforts are undermined by the industrial court (Edwards, 21). Higher presentation of employees in the trade unions has contributed to higher returns or positive results.à This has been the inspiration by many employees to join trade unions.à The industrial Relation Act in Irish government which was amended in 2003 has been seen to favour trade unions.à However, the trade unions have realized their ineffectiveness due to the legislative system where many cases remain in court for so long.à The trade unions in Irish government were accorded right to bargain though labour courts and labour Relations Commission were given greater powers to resolve recognition and representation disputes (Beardwell, 213). Many countries are known to have similar legislative systems which give industrial Courts right to deal with employeesââ¬â¢ disputes.à In countries, industrial courts recognize trade unions more than individual employees.à This had led to many employees been pressurized by the system to join trade union so that the disputes that have in industrial courts may be dealt with fast especially with intervention of trade unions. When trade unions are pushing for the employeesââ¬â¢ interests, the employees feel at liberty to express them because they will not suffer victimization as would be the case if they pursued the interests or grievances as individual employees.à The labour relations commissions however, has reported cases of disillusionment the failure of the parties in disputes to meet timescale and deadlines in many instance.à The labour relations commission data in Irish government indicate that the failures are in most cases caused by employers but trade unions are not exempted too. In Europe, most employees even those working in small firms have enrolled into trade unions and this enhanced the services delivered to them.à However, the effort of trade unions has been undermined by the size and nature of employment. Trade unions are supposed to be independent in their practices that are directed into addressing the employeesââ¬â¢ needs.à However, itââ¬â¢s easier said than done.à Some trade union representatives in their leadership positions seek to gain favour from the government.à This has led to few trade unions compromising their mission and objectives and this has proved ineffectiveness of the trade unions as employee representative.à In pursuit of favour from government officials or government itself, some union leaders have accepted tribes and this caused serious repercussions for the employeeââ¬â¢s grievances. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Work Cited Beardwell Ian. ââ¬ËA Critical Analysis.ââ¬â¢ Contemporary Industrial Relations vol.1 (1996): 212-311.
